Publications and Media Center Overview 

From our student-staffed office in the Student Union, the Publications & Media Center offers free programs to support 100+ student publication and media organizations on campus. 

The mission of the Publications & Media Center (PMC) is to strengthen and connect the Cal publications and media community by offering support and resources to registered student organizations. We are home to UC Berkeley's publications and media student organizations and we are committed to helping students grow and develop as leaders, editors, writers, filmmakers, journalists, photographers, designers and content creators.

We run a campus publications distribution program, a media equipment rental program, and workshops and training for students interested in media and journalism.

Job Overview

The Publications & Media Center (PMC) Design Consultant is part of a team of 4-5 Student Union staff who support the design-focused creative programs in the Student Union (the Creative Lab and the PMC), reporting to the Assistant Director of Creative Programs. During regularly scheduled shifts, the Design Consultant will hold open office hours for students seeking assistance with design services, including but not limited to publications design, flyer design and poster design. The Design Consultant is expected to be available for appointments with student organizations for assistance. 

This position is stationed in the Student Union’s Creative Lab and will be trained in basic MLK Student Union building operations.

Essential DutiesDesign Support 

  • Support students with design needs including but not limited to formatting, layout, teaching skills, troubleshooting and creative support. 

  • Supports the PMC team in designing materials such as flyers, newsletters and posters. 

  • Develops curricula and facilitates trainings for the publications and media community.

  • Coordinates events relevant to design such as programs and workshops. 

  • Communicates with and assists Student Media groups as assigned.

  • Create a portfolio of PMC design services support work with before and after images related to your work with student media groups.

General PMC Support and Services 

  • Responds to email personally, as a staff member, and to the address in a timely fashion

  • Maintains the PMC calendar and helps coordinate use of the cage and our office space

  • Maintains a welcoming and inviting work space

  • Maintain the PMC website

Administrative Duties 

  • Performs assigned tasks completely and effectively

  • Arrives to scheduled shifts, meetings, and training sessions on time and in professional attire

  • Reports any problems to supervisors in a timely manner

Building Operations 

  • Act as “eyes and ears” for the Student Union (SU).

  • Understand the safety routes and practices at the SU and surrounding areas.

  • Provide coverage for stationed staff, as needed.

  • Back-up support for professional and student staff.


  • Other duties as assigned


  • Current full-time student at the time of employment with good disciplinary and academic standing

  • Proactive approach to projects and eagerness to support, enhance and connect the publications and media community at UC Berkeley

  • Past experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator

  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive peer relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, both in writing and in person

  • Dependable and attentive to detail

  • Friendly and approachable

  • Knowledge of filmmaking software and equipment a bonus


  • Be responsible with staff privileges, including use of equipment and access to restricted spaces 

  • Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to center business, clientele, and staff 

  • Work all assigned shifts or arrange with supervisor to make up at another time; accurate and transparent reporting of time worked. 

Shifts: Approx. 15 hrs/week (Monday-Thursday Noon-9pm, Friday Noon-5pm)

Starting hourly rate: $16.82  per hour
